The 3M™ Hydrated sponges uses simplified packaging to minimise handling and preparation, and reduces waste.

  • Ready-to-use, pre-hydrated sponges for easy and convenient environmental and food sample collection
  • Durable sponge withstands scrubbing
  • Sponge bag with write-on label for ease in labeling samples
  • Includes two decontaminated gloves for safety and convenience

These biocide-free cellulose sponges do not interfere with microorganism viability within 48 hours of refrigeration for Salmonella and E. coli, and 72 hours for Listeria. Two, universal-fit, polyethylene gloves are included for convenience and to safely facilitate aseptic handling. The cellulose material is durable, absorbent, and effectively holds and releases the sample to minimise excess dripping. The 0,53 L bag is double laminated for strength, puncture resistance, and durability when blending or transporting. Wire ties ensure a secure closure and a blue top and large white write-on area helps identify the bag. The write-on area is ideal for documenting data, date, time of collection, and other information for accuracy and easy identification. Both the sample bag and sponge are decontaminated through gamma irradiation to maintain organism viability and long shelf life.

The Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) approach is the most widely accepted food safety management protocol worldwide. Sample collection products from 3M are a crucial part of this approach to identify potential food-borne hazards and pinpoint where they reside. Portability, stable enrichment media, and easy-to-handle swabs and sponges are designed to test for a wide variety of potential hazards and deliver exceptionally accurate results. They are engineered to safely gather, hold, and secure contents from the collection site to the lab without leaking or compromising the sample.

Buffered peptone water broth is used as a diluent or for non selective enrichment of microorganisms such as Salmonella sp. or E. coli from foods and environmental samples prior to selective enrichment and isolation. Microorganisms that may be present in a food product can be sub-lethally injured by food processing techniques and may not be recovered by direct selection techniques. Buffered peptone water broth promotes the recovery of those microorganisms that may be injured.
