Chloramphenicol is a synthetic antibiotic, which was first isolated from strains of Streptomyces venezuelae
It has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Mode of Action: Inhibits translation on the 50S ribosomal subunit at the peptidyl transferase step (elongation inhibition). It is bacteriostatic. Mode of Resistance: Acetylation by chloramphenicol acetyltransferase.
Soluble in methanol (50 mg/ml - clear, pale yellow solution), butanol, ethyl acetate, acetone, ethanol, propylene glycol; slightly soluble in water, ether; insoluble in benzene, petroleum ether, vegetable oils.
