Luminol is a luminescent peroxidase substrate that can be used as a chemiluminescent reagent for the determination of viable mammalian cells and bacteria. Luminol also has forensic application as a presumptive test for latent blood detection and is commonly employed in detection strategies by flow injection analysis, for pharmaceutical and environmental characterization. Chemiluminescent and electrochemiluminescent probes based upon luminal are beginning to merge with biochip and microarray development as a possible substitutes for the more wellestablished fluorescent probes.
